vNations wiki editing tips and conventions
Contents |
Talk Pages
- Talk pages are for discussing changes to the page they reference; they're for conversations between wiki editors about how the wiki should be updated. Actual game content should generally not go in talk pages, nor should talk pages be redirected, moved, or otherwise fussed with.
- Talk pages for users are for sending messages to or having conversations with or about that user.
- You should sign any comments you make on a talk page, by putting 4 tildes in a row at the end of your entry. ~~~~
- You should NOT sign edits to articles, only talk page comments.
- You can customize your signature in special:preferences.
User Pages
- Notable vCitizens should have their personal wiki article in their user page. A vanity page may be created in the main namespace which redirects to their userpage; the vanity page may also contain Categories but should not contain other content. For example, the vanity page for Xavier Darkmye looks like this:
#REDIRECT [[User:Xavier Darkmyre]]
[[Category:Beta Tester]]
- If you're writing your own user page, or editing someone else's user page, please, try to not write offensive or misleading content, or make up things that never happened. You can roleplay a little if you want, but remember: it's a wiki, not a personal blog.
Images
- External images are allowed but the site where they are hosted must first be added to the whitelist. If you don't see the site you want to use in that list, you can post a request on the whitelist talk page.
- To embed an image from an approved site, just paste in the http reference to the image. No brackets, tags, or other formatting are needed, just the actual link itself.
Creating a Page
- If you want to add a page, you can simply type the name of the new page into the Search box and press "Go". (Not "Search".) There will be an option to create the page on the search results page you're returned. Another option is to create a link to the new page somewhere on an already existing page, then click on the red link to the nonexistent page.
Moving Pages
In general, page moves should only be used if a page is created with a typoed or otherwise incorrect name. For most purposes, redirects and links should be preferred.
Further help
Since this is a MediaWiki installation, most of the markup syntax and options are identical to Wikipedia. Take a look at the extensive MediaWiki help files here for detailed documentation.
